OVERVIEW

All treks and camps in the vicinity of Munnar will take you through the majestic mountains of the Western Ghat range verdant valleys draped in unique ecosystems – vast expanses of tea plantations, rolling grasslands, Shola forests (patches of ever green forests), clusters of rhododendrons, wild flowers and gurgling mountain streams. All the tours that we host are conducted with relevant permits obtained from the authorities and are environmentally sustainable. Itineraries are exclusive and flexible. Your trek begins at Suryanelly, a small village situated about 80km from Thekkady, heading towards Munnar and 24km from Munnar, towards Thekkady.

ITINERARY

Today, after a brief jeep ride from Suryanelli and arrival at the point where a path winds its way through vast stretches to arrive at the Suryanelli Estate which is the highest tea plantation in the world. The trek begins from hereon, gradually ascending from a height of 1800 meters to 2160 meters for a distance of 10km to arrive at your campsite. Later, visit one of the oldest tea factories in this region, built in1935. You could taste samples of the some top quality organic tea. Return and spend the night at the camp in comfortable tents around a bonfire. Your campsite for the night on an eastern slope of the Western Ghats and you will get to view spectacular sunrises from here.

After breakfast the second day of the trek begins from Kolukkumalai along a short stretch through the tea plantation, over stretches of rolling grasslands, through a Shola forest, over a ridge with spectacular views of the lowlands of Tamil Nadu, to the foot of a mountain named Meesapulimalai “the second highest peak in South India. The trek will then climb for about an hour to summit the peak.
After a brief halt for refreshments, the trek continues through a valley, pine forests and swathes of rhododendrons, over grasslands with gurgling streams flowing through to arrive at your campsite at Rhodo-valley concluding the trek. Overnight, camp in comfortable tents beside a gurgling mountain stream

This phase of the trek travels from the Rhodo-valley camp, passing through pine forests, rolling grasslands and shola forests surrounded by the spectacular beauty of mountain ranges that stretch to the horizon and arriving at Camp Footprint situated in the Yellapatty Estate. The camp site is surrounded by forests and panoramic mountain views where clouds often past below.

The Camp Footprint is also situated on an eastern slope of the Western Ghats and so, on this morning too you will most likely witness a stunningly beautiful sunrise. After breakfast, the trek will continue along mountain ridges with scenic views of tea plantations, Meesapulimalai and the Suryanelli estate and the low lands of Tamil Nadu. The vegetation along the route is the habitat of numerous species of endemic birds and wildlife and there are possibilities that you will spot some of them in the course of today’s trek. The trek concludes at Top Station. Overnight at Top Station.

After breakfast and a stroll to a point on Top Station with splendid views of the plains of Tamil Nadu below you will proceed to your onward destination.
