OVERVIEW

We offer you the best Kerala Tour Packages which includes Punnathurkota Elephant Camp. Choose from a wide range of tour packages based on your interests. Two kilometers from the Guruvayur temple is the elephant camp of Punnathurkota. ‘Kota’ means ‘fort’ or ‘palace’ in Malayalam and this 10-acre elephant camp is actually the former grounds of the fort and palace of the local ruler. It is now known as the ‘aana kota,’ or ‘elephant fort.’ Between forty to sixty elephants of all ages and sizes live here – from cute toddlers to the ageing tusker!
Punnathurkota also houses a training school for the mahouts (‘papan’), but visitors come to see the elephants who spend their days gracefully lounging and swaying under tall shady trees, feeding, playing, and bathing in the large pond, all while they patiently await their turn to be dressed up to marched in the temple’s daily rituals or occasional Kerala festivals.
