Kannur district has always been renowned for its handloom industry and some of Kerala’s finest weavers come from here, but it took a Christian Missionary Society from Switzerland, the Basel Mission, to provide the major breakthrough to the handloom and dyeing industry in Kannur during British rule in 1844. The Mission not only opened many weaving centers (which soon had a monopoly on khaki in the region) but also introduced modern looms that helped shift production from a cottage industry style to the factory system, all of which made Kannur emerge as a prominent handloom production center in India.
Today the centre serves as a museum of handloom and handicrafts and one of Kerala’s go to tourism spots, providing a link between the traditional worker and the larger world. Much of the center’s product is exported.
