This ruined 17th century fort has one of the most eventful histories of all Kerala forts, and it stands on the banks of the Payaswini, or Changragiri, river in Kasargod district. The river served as the boundary between two powerful kingdoms at the time – Kolathunadu and Thulunadu. When Thulunadu was captured by the all powerful Vijayanagara Empire in the north (in present day Karnataka), the Kolathunadu kings lost the Chandragiri region to them, but with the fall of the Vijayanagar empire in the 16th century, the administrator of the conquered region, Vengappa Nayaka, declared its independence. When his son, Shivappa Nayaka reigned, he built a vast chain of forts of which Chandragiri is one.
