Believed to have been built during the time of the city’s founding in the 12th century AD – or perhaps even earlier – the Tali Siva temple was one of two Brahmin royal temples patronized by the Zamorin of Calicut. One of the most historic of Kerala temples, it’s well known for its annual competition of religious scholars and philosophers known as the ‘Revathi Pattathanam,’ as well as being the site of the famous anti-caste agitation of 1911 (for the rights of 'low-caste' people to use the road between the tank and the temple). The temple remains, to this day, one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in Kozhikode. The austere architecture is in keeping with the age of the temple. Visitors should especially note the flaring base and tapering necks of the ‘elephant bellied’ walls. One of the two ancient temple tanks can still be seen.
