St. Francis Church was built in 1503 AD, making it the first of European built churches in India, as well as one of the great Kerala old churches. This small church was originally built by the Portuguese using brick and mud, but it was administered in succession by the Dutch, the English, and finally the Indians – being renovated throughout the process. Its tiled roof with gabled timber frames and stepped pinnacle house an arched nave, carved wooden pulpit, book rests, confessional, and baptism platform that work together to echo a venerable history.
Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1521 AD, and the area of his initial resting place is still clearly defined in a corner inside the church. Visitors will find a gravestone erected in his memory in the compound outside, along with those of other Portuguese and Dutch eminences of the era. A baptism and marriage register that was maintained in the church since 1751 today allows many Dutch travellers to trace their ancestry.
