Ramanuja Mandapam is one of the numerous rock-cut cave temples in Mahabalipuram believed to originate from between 640 - 674 AD. The entrance to the cave is adorned with six columns covered with stone slabs and encloses a quadrangular open to the air forecourt. The interior contains three cells, the largest with two columns and pilasters adorned with horned lions. Steps cut in stone leading to the top of rock. It is believed that the temple was first a Shaivism place of worship that was later turned into a Vaishnavite shrine. In the process many experts believe many exquisite sculptures were destroyed or defaced.
