In a picturesque, laid back region of canals, lagoons and backwaters a few miles north of Cochin lies the modest town of Alappuzha. The sea coast is famous for its abundance of prawns, lobsters, fish, turtles, and other ocean fauna, while the wetlands around the town is a haven to thousands of migratory common teal, duck and cormorants that flock here seasonally.
One of the region’s oldest planned towns; you’ll have no problem in finding your way around its quaint streets, unlike elsewhere in India! After checking out the houseboats in Alappuzha, you can travel to the ancient lighthouse on the shore, which is the first to be built on the entire Laccadive coast, or make enquiries about the renowned snake boat races that feature hundreds of oars flashing in and out of the water in perfect unison in the nearby Punnamada Lake, which occurs on the second Saturday of August every year. Another fabled annual event is the seasonal maturing and arrival of vast quantities of fish and prawns on the coast, otherwise known as the ‘chakara.’ This time of year, is characterized by its shifting sandbanks and its prosperity and festive gaiety in the air.
